Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key By: Jack Gantos

Chapter 1: Joey seems to be smart and knows it. “I’m wired. Yet he does not pay attention in class, he gets kicked out of math lesson.  He spins around in hall way. He spins his way to the principal’s office.

Chapter 2: Father and mother left Joey when he was in kindergarten. Raised by grandmother.  Mother came back. Grandma would watch Joey when Mother worked. Grandma couldn’t handle Joey’s hyperactivity and would yell at him. She would throw fits. She left one day in a huff and has not been seen for days. Mother has been giving Joey ‘meds’.

Chapter 3: Over the summer the school contacted Joey’s mother. They said he really should have been held back a year but no teachers wanted him in their classes. The school recommended seeing a doctor. This was when Joey was given his prescription. His meds made him sit still and pay attention. Joey’s mom has her medicine too ‘alcoholic drink’. They worked for well the first day but were not reliable for all days. The doctors blamed this on puberty. Joey finds out that his Grandma is in Pittsburgh with his father.

Chapter 4: Since Joey’s mother does not get home from work until two hours after Joey is done with school he has a house key on a string which he keeps tied around his neck. He was playing with it in class one day putting it in his mouth and nearly swallowing it and fishing it back up with the string. Mrs. Maxy came over and cut the string from the key. Joey turns to a classmate and bets a dollar that he will swallow his key. He does and realizes that the string is no longer attached. Joey freaks out and is taken to the nurse. Given some medicine twice that makes you throw up, the key does not show up. Joey is then taken to the special ed room where he is introduced to Mrs. Howard.

Chapter 5: Joey’s key returns through a course of nature. After washing and a new string he goes to school. He swallows it again and pulls it back up with the key. Mrs. Maxy takes his key and puts it on her bulletin board and tells Joey that it will be given to her each morning and given back at the end of the day. Joey is then sent to special ed class. It is Harold’s birthday and there is a party. Joey blows out his candle and is sent to the chair. Upon returning home without his key he waits for his mother on the porch. He has questions for his mother. He asks if she drank while she was pregnant with Joey. She confesses she did but it was fine. He asks this because a new child is brought into the special class that Joey overhears the  mothers talking about his mother’s drinking when pregnant.

Chapter 6: The fourth and fifth grade classes were taking a field trip to an Amish farm. They toured through a house and Joey became overwhelmed with the smell of something wonderful. In the kitchen of the Amish house they were serving Shoofly pie. Mrs. Maxy refused to let Joey have a piece because of all the sugar in it. After the tour came pumpkin carving. Mrs. Maxy also refused to let Joey have a knife and insisted on just drawing on a pumpkin. Joey wanted to carve, so he refused to give it back and ended up throwing the knife into the cornfield. He was sent to the bus. Instead of going to the bus he made his way into the kitchen and stole a whole pie. Running off into the cornfield he ate the entire pie and began to feel a sugar high. He ran through the cornfield and into the barn. He climbed all the banisters to the very top of the barn. He came face to face with an owl. A farmer climbed to the top to get Joey on a huge ladder. Mrs. Maxy told Joey not to move. Not listening, Joey walked across a beam and jumped into a pile of hay hurting his ankle.

Chapter 7: During the morning of the school day there was a substitute teacher. An announcement was made that gifted students should report to the auditorium for a meeting. Joey snuck along with the gifted students in his class and lingered in the stage curtains. He heard messages about changing the world and making it a better place and helping out other people. He was inspired. He returned to his class and instead of playing outside for recess he made bumper stickers with the message “Hate is not a family value” on them. The safety scissors would not work when cutting the poster board. Children were returning from recess so Joey quickly ran up to grab Mrs. Maxy’s scissors. As he was running to the back of the classroom he slipped on his one slipper and sliced the tip of Maria Drombrowski’s nose off. An ambulance was called and Joey was sent out of the classroom with all of his belongings.

Chapter 8: Joey’s mother is called in from work to speak with Mrs. Jarzab. With Joy’s record she recommends the special ed school in town. Protocol requires Joey be suspended for 6 weeks and counseling.

Chapter 9: Joey stays home from school. Tomorrow he starts the special ed classes. His mother goes off to work. Joey breaks one of the biggest rules. He leaves his house and walks to Maria’s house. Her father answers the door and tells Joey that “messed up kids shouldn’t be aloud to go to school with regular kids”. He wants to apologize to Maria’s face but her father scares Joey away and then insults his mother.

Chapter 10: Today is Joey’s first day at the Special Ed Center. He meets Mr. Ed (Special Ed) and is shown around the school. He meets a couple children on the bus.

Chapter 11: Joey’s teacher is bringing him his homework assignments to keep up and not fall behind. In Special school he visits the doctor today. His doctor tells him that his meds are not working properly but to get new ones he needs a brain test to find the right meds.

Chapter 12: Joey and his mother are on their way to Pittsburgh. Joey’s mother confesses that when she left she had a drinking problem. Joey talked about the awful things his grandmother would make him do and how harsh she treated him.

Chapter 13: After Joey’s brain scan appointment, him and his mother do some site seeing before returning home. Joey has interest in contacting his father, Carter Pigza. His mother is not keen on this at all and insists no. She explains he still has a drinking problem and is concerned with how he would treat Joey.

Chapter 14: Joey’s brain scans came back normal so his attention disorder is not neurological. His doctor prescribed him with a patch that seems to be doing well and he only has a few more weeks left at his special school. Now searching for a dog with his mother, Joey really wants a Chihuahua. After looking in the newspaper they find a part Chihuahua and a part dachshund. They adopt him and Joey names him Pablo Pigza.

Chapter 15: Joey, his mother, and Mrs. Maxy all have a meeting to discuss whether or not Joey can come back to the school. An agreement was made that Joey must complete one week in the regular special ed classroom before he can rejoin his class. He is welcomed back!
