A New Coat for Anna By: Harriet Ziefert

Winter came and Anna needed a new coat. Her blue coat was too small and no longer fuzzy. Mamma told her after the war was over she could get a new coat. The war ended but the stores did not re open and people were still more. Mama started collecting things to barter. Anna’s mom walked to a farm and offered the farmer a gold watch for some wool. They had to wait until spring for the wool so Anna and Mama went everyday to feed and pet the sheep. When spring came the sheep were shaved and the gold watch was given to the farmer. Anna and her mother then went to an old woman with a spinning wheel. Mamma offered to exchange a pretty lamp so she could spin the wool into yarn. The woman agreed but she was old so she wouldn’t have it until summer. When summer came they made the exchange. Anna asked for a red coat. Mamma and Anna picked some lingonberries. They had to wait till the end of summer to pick ripe ones. They boiled water and put the berries into the pot. Then dipped the yarn into the dye and hung it to dry. They took the yarn to the weaver and offered to exchange a necklace so the weaver could weave the yarn into cloth. Two weeks later the exchange was made. Anna and her mother set off to see the tailor she offered to exchange the teapot for a new coat. The tailor took Anna’s measurements and told them to come back in a week. He hung the coat in the window so everyone could see. They made the exchange and Anna finally had a new coat. It was now Christmas time and mama had dinner for Anna and everyone who helped make her coat. On Christmas day she visited the sheep and said thank you.
